Sync and Recover Garmin Data via USB (Android Only)

Step-by-step instructions for syncing and recovering data from supported Garmin devices to Android devices using the USB method.

- For Researchers and Participants -

Once a Garmin device has been successfully paired with the Labfront app, it can be synced with an Android device using a USB connection. This can be especially useful if there is a large amount of data to transfer.

Note

Adapters will be needed to establish the USB connection.

Requirements

  • Android smartphone or tablet
  • USB adapter (USB-A or USB-C) to connect smartphone to Garmin cable (USB-A)
  • Supported Garmin device (most newer devices)
    • ⚠️ Does not work with vívosmart 4, vívosmart 3, vívoactive HR, and other legacy devices
  • Using Labfront direct data collection method

Using the Garmin USB method for syncing

This method can be useful if a large amount of data needs to be transferred, as a USB connection can offer faster transfer rates than Bluetooth.

  1. Log in to Labfront Companion normally
  2. Pair the Garmin device with the Labfront app
  3. When you want to sync, connect the Garmin device to the smartphone via the adapter and charging cable
  4. Follow the instructions in the pop-up
  5. Once the sync is completed, wait for the "Your data has been uploaded" banner at the top of the main page

Using the Garmin USB method to recover data

This method is useful for researchers wanting to recover device data from a participant who forgot to sync or had issues syncing.

  1. Regenerate code for the participant account from which you want to recover data
  2. Log in using the code on the Labfront app
  3. Pair the Garmin device with the Labfront app
  4. Connect the Garmin device to the smartphone using the charging cable and a USB adapter
  5. Follow the instructions in the pop-up
  6. Once the sync is completed, wait for the "Your data has been uploaded" banner at the top of the main page

Note

If you are recovering more than one device, we recommend logging out and uninstalling/reinstalling the app between different users.
