How to Request Historical Garmin Connect Data

This guide shows you how to request a retroactive backfill of Garmin Connect data for a participant, whether you're filling a data gap or pulling data from before a participant's official start date in your study.

Backfills are available on all paid Labfront plans and can retrieve up to two years of historical Garmin Connect data.

Prerequisites

  • A paid Labfront plan
  • The participant's Garmin Connect account, with "Historical Data" access enabled for Labfront (see Step 1)
  • The following details ready to send our team:
    • Project name and Labfront account email
    • Affected participant ID(s)
    • The date range you want backfilled

Note

Only Garmin Connect data available in the Garmin Connect cloud can be backfilled. Labfront Companion data cannot be backfilled.

Steps

1. Enable Historical Data access in Garmin Connect

Before a backfill can run, each participant's Garmin Connect account needs to grant Labfront permission to access historical data. Without this, the backfill will fail.

Ask the participant to:

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app
  2. Go to More > Settings > Connected Apps > Labfront
  3. Turn on Historical Data

Note

If our team has reset the Garmin connection on our end as part of troubleshooting, also ask the participant to open the Labfront app and tap Get Started to re-link their account.

2. Gather your request details

Before contacting us, confirm you have:

  • The project name and your Labfront account email
  • The participant ID(s) that need a backfill
  • The date range you need

3. Contact Labfront Support

Email support@labfront.com with the details above and confirm that Historical Data access has been enabled for each participant account on your list. This lets us start the backfill right away instead of following up to ask for it.

4. Wait for confirmation

Our team will run the backfill and let you know once it's complete.

Verify It Worked

Once the backfill finishes, you can view the recovered data in the Data Visualizer tab or in your data exports.

Note

If the backfilled data predates a participant's official Day 1 in Labfront, it won't appear on the Adherence dashboard. It will still be visible in the Data Visualizer and included in your exports.

FAQs

Why did the backfill fail/come back empty?

Historical Data access likely wasn't enabled before the pull, there is no Garmin Connect data for those dates, or the data falls outside the two-year window. Confirm the permission is on and the data is available in Garmin Connect, then ask us to retry.

What if we need data older than two years?

Labfront can only retroactively access up to two years of Garmin Connect data. Anything older can't be retrieved.

What can I do if the participant can't sign back into their old Garmin account?

Contact Support with the details. In some cases, we may be able to attempt access directly, though this isn't guaranteed and requires coordinating secure credential sharing with our team.
