🎓 LABFRONT'S STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT FAQs
What is included in the Labfront Advanced plan?
With the Labfront Advanced plan, you'll have access to our data collection platform for one year and be able to collect physiological and survey data from up to 20 participants.
All plans include Labfront's adherence dashboard where you can track all of the participants' wearable and survey data in one place (participants download a companion app where they can track their tasks). From the feedback we received, a lot of researchers appreciate that because the survey and wearable data are integrated you can avoid sending out Google Forms or having to merge all of the data as it's already well-organized in participant folders (you can check out a sample of our downloadable format here).
Are Labfront Analytics reports included with the grant?
No, the Analytics reports are separate.
Are devices included in the grant?
Devices are not included in this grant, but our partnership with Garmin does allow us to offer exclusive discounts to academic researchers. You can contact us at hello@labfront.com if you're interested in purchasing devices for your project.
Can an advisor or professor submit the grant application on a student's behalf or should the student submit it?
The grants are designed to be run by a student with the help of an advisor/professor. They should submit the grant themselves but one of our criteria is a strong letter of recommendation and that has been a big deciding factor in our previous grants.
How long after submitting an application can we expect to hear back about whether we have received the grant?
We will review applications on an ongoing basis approximately every 2 months. As we aim to review all submissions as thoroughly as possible, we appreciate your patience. If you haven't heard back from us after 2 months, please reach out to hello@labfront.com.
Will the students be able to put Labfront in their IRBs?
Yes! We’ve passed all our IRBs in the two years we’ve been active. We have support documentation here and we can offer additional support if necessary.
How long would students have to complete the research following the disbursement of the grant?
The grant includes one-year access to a Labfront Advanced account, so we encourage students to complete their research within a year.
What does Labfront do with the data collected from the students' submissions?
The research findings and publications all belong strictly to the grantee. All of the data collected (self-reported and physiological, through Labfront or Garmin Connect) belongs to the grantee. We do not access or own this anonymized data at any point before, during, or after the study.

If I applied for a previous Labfront grant, can I apply again?
Absolutely! There are currently no restrictions for submissions so you can submit an application for the current grant even if you applied for a previous Labfront grant.
Are the grants open to international students?
Yes! The grants are open to students worldwide. Students do not have to be residing in the U.S. or attending a U.S. institution.

Absolutely! There are currently no restrictions for submissions so you can submit an application for the Women's Health Grant even if you applied for the Undergraduate, Graduate, or other Labfront Research Grant.

What is Labfront?
Labfront's platform is a code-free digital biomarker collection and analytics solution.

Are devices included in the grant?
Yes! Each awardee will receive five Garmin vívosmart® 5 fitness trackers (worth approximately $750 USD).
Does the grantee receive the smartwatches or does the institution receive them on their behalf?
The Garmin devices will go directly to the awardee rather than the institution.
Is the grant open to both students and faculty?
Yes! This grant is open to all researchers worldwide who are:
- Conducting planned or current research using data from wearables
- Academic institution faculty, research institute employees, or currently enrolled students in higher education
Is the grant open to international researchers?
Yes! We welcome applicants worldwide. However, please note that our platform and app are in English.
What data can I collect using the Labfront platform?

What is special about Labfront is that because we have a partnership with Garmin, we have the ability to configure Garmin devices using the Garmin Health SDKs to increase the sensor resolution, allowing researchers to capture higher-resolution data than normally collected by Garmin.
This means that with the vívosmart® 5, you can capture beat-to-beat or interbeat interval data and derive valuable metrics like heart rate variability. That's what this team from Stanford did. No, the Analytics reports are separate (with the exception of the Sleep Research Grant which includes the Actigraphy Duo package). However, we will offer onboarding assistance.
When can we expect the award announcement?
As we aim to review all submissions as thoroughly as possible, it could take up to a month after the deadline to announce the winner.
After a winner is selected, when can they expect to receive the devices?
The devices are usually received by the grantee within a few weeks.
